Newport Bay Bass Tournament – April 12

May 1st, 2014 by FIB'ers

April 12 finally arrived and it was time for Spring Break, and our first tournament of the year – Newport Harbor. 10 boats entered the bay anticipating a tough bite, but hoping the right one would come on the next cast. 18 adults and 4 juniors were trying to catch Spotted Bay Bass, Sandbass, and Halibut on artificial lures. While every team reported catching a variety of fish throughout the 7 hour tournament, only 6 of the teams caught fish that met the minimum requirement set by the DFW – Sandbass and Spotted Bay Bass (14 inches) and Halibut (22 inches).
Art and Andrew Gomez weighed 2 Spotted Bay Bass with a big fish of 1.64# and a total of 2.82# to take down Third place for the tournament.

Dorian also caught the only Halibut weighed in the tournament. It was just long enough at 22.5 inches and weighed 4.15#. Congratulations go out to Dorian Quimby for being the first person to weigh a legal Halibut and win the Halibut side pot since we started it 3 years ago!!

Afterwards we shared fish stories and food in the parking lot. Great weather and fellowship was enjoyed by all!
Thank you Lord!
Our next event is in Long Beach, May 24. All three species of bass are eligible, and we will have the Halibut side pot open as well. For more information, check out the “Events” page on our website.
