FIB’ers Whale Watching Trip Report 3/9/2011

What a beautiful day to look for whales. The sun is shining and the water is calm as 73 Olive Crest kids, their staff and FIB’er volunteers take to the open sea, on the Nautilus, in search of these massive mammals.  Our journey takes us south along the coast. Along the way we spot a few dolphins feeding and a few gulls flying.  A sea lion or two is thrown into the mix.  However, there were no whales in sight yet. After an hour or so, Captain Robbie swings around and makes a bee-line heading north into more open water.  Four low-flying pelicans are spotted buzzing above the waves. Are whales in our future? Not yet! He puts us on a huge amount of dolphin going somewhere in a hurry.  He maneuvers the boat so they begin to run along-side it to the glee and excitement of all the kids on-board.  After awhile, we chart a course toward home and continue to look for these illusive beasts.  With the bell buoy in sight, we make a swing by it as we observe the sea lions lazily sunning themselves. Then, we headed into the harbor.

Most of our trips produce sightings, but this one didn’t. However, everyone on-board enjoyed the boat ride and enjoyed what we did see on our journey. God gave us a wonderful day to enjoy His creation and everyone on the trip had a great time.

Thanks, to all the FIB’er volunteers for their support.
