SWBA Round #3 “Coastal Clash” – Dana Point

Round #3 took place down in Dana Point on May 14, 2011. Starting time was 6AM and everyone had to be back for the weigh in by 2:30PM. With no boundaries on this event, some went as far north as Palos Verdes, and some went as far south as Point Loma. The winning limit of Bass came from the only boat that went down to Point Loma, and that was Ed Howerton who managed to weigh in over 27 pounds of Calicos, and he did it fishing solo! The heaviest fish of the tournament was a monster 9.61# Calico that was caught while fishing the Long Beach BreakWALL. Conditions were rough and tough for many teams, and there were several teams who suffered damage to their boats and to their pride. FIB’ers Ron and Jayson of team Anchored, ran 50 miles south, straight into a heafty south wind and combined swell, to fish La Jolla. On the way down they noticed that the welds on their steering wheel were breaking apart. Quick thinking and a pair of vise grips allowed this team fish the La Jolla area, and still make it back to the weigh in on time. Unfortunately, they did not find biting fish and were only able to weigh one small Calico Bass. While avoiding the dreaded DNW (Did Not Weigh) they slipped 10 places in the standings. Can you imagine running over 100 miles for only one small fish????……..BUMMER!!!

Pulling out the only Trifecta of the event were the Bassbusters – Jim Kiech and Dave Shill.
