1.5 Day on The Voyager

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013

Our 1.5 Day Charter aboard The Voyager, was awesome! 13 FIB’ers were on this one. We caught limits of Yellowtail, one Dorado, and two Bluefin Tuna. The catching was wide open at times, and the 10-12 pound yellowtail were chewing just about anything that hit the water. Captain Todd Meyer is a class act, and he makes fishing more fun with his humor, and unique way of keeping everyone in the game with his constant tips and reminders. Fishing on this boat is a lot of fun. Here is what Walt Galen had to say about the trip. It was a dream trip. If there is such a thing for 10lb Yellowtails. Very surprising how hard those smaller Yellow Tails can fight. The weather was perfect almost glassy seas and almost no wind. A bit slow to start the day but by lunch time it was “WIDE OPEN”. Like Eddie stated the fish just stuck with the boat. No matter how far we would drift from the original kelp patty. The YT’s just followed us. We were getting bit on every cast with the live bait. I dumped my 20 # rig and went to the heavy duty set up….. #25lb and they still chomped whatever was thrown into the water. Finally I pulled out my ultra heavy duty 30 lb rig with a 1oz wt. trying to get below the rat pack to the zone where some trophys might live. Tried to get my sardine below the pack but it was impossible. Would drop down right beside the boat in free spool and every time it was “Fresh One” about 20 ft. down. Trying to get down to about 60 ft. was impossible. Later on in the afternoon we come upon a smaller kelp patty and the Captain announces that there are a few fish around it. He would never get within casting range of the kelp – always positioning us about 100 yds from it. My 25lb live bait rig can cast a sardine extremely well so we loaded up and sent one strong volunteer to its final destiny in the direction of the kelp. About 10 seconds after it hits the water a large boil erupts in the close vicinity. Guys on the boat are yelling that the fish boiled on my bait. Sure enough my spool goes into hyper spin. Give a solid 5 count and reel down to a very solid pick up. Could tell immediately that this was a very large powerful fish. I sure could not stop saying…. “This is a BIG Fish” must have repeated that 10 times…..This Blue Fin was very strong with excellent endurance. Made no less than 5 very hard 40 yd runs. I could not budge this fish, thought it would never come to the surface. But then again with 25 # fluoro. One must be patient. About 15 min into the fight it finally started to give way to fatigue and could slowly be pumped to the surface. Had to hit the oxygen after that battle. It weighed out at 29 lbs thought it was at least a 40 pounder during the fight. Am thinking “Jack Pot” but the Sally, who got bit about 30 seconds after I did, landed one that eclipsed mine by 1 pound. There went that day dream $$$$. However she did a great job and deserved her just reward. Overall, it was a fantastic day and a half’er. It does not get any better then what we experienced.

What a great start

Calico Bass bite full speed for the 2013 Calico Coastal Tournament

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

Report by Jayson Quimby
Saturday, June 29th began with blue skies, a medium south swell, and lots of willing Calico Bass to chomp our offerings. 8 teams participated in this year’s event. The boundaries were Newport to the tip of Palos Verdes, but I think all teams fished NW of Los Alamitos Harbor, splitting their time between fishing the breakwaters, and the various reefs, and kelp beds of Palos Verdes. The fish bit all day. I had 4 guys on my boat, and I am sure we caught well over 80 fish for the day. I knew it was going to take some bigger than average fish to win this one! Unfortunately, I did not make it to the weigh in. I ran out of gas, but Jimmy Decker was nice enough to offer to take Ron, Dave, and our fish to the weigh in, while Mitch and I waited for Vessel Assist to bring us some fuel.

Every team reported excellent fishing, and below are the results:

1st Place: Tom & Val Handzus- 13.08 #’s with a big fish of 6.33#’s
2nd Place: Scott Reason & Jim Opaleary – 11.77 #’s with a big fish of 4.23 #’s
3rd Place: Andrew Gomez, Jeremy Glenn, and Jackson Mentevier – 10.50 #’s with a big fish 4.69#’s

June 2013 Juniors AM 1/2 Day Trip on The Amigo

Friday, June 28th, 2013

The Jrs. gathered at dock side of Newport Landing, with their usual amount bouncy(tiggerish) energy. We boarded the Amigo and left the dock at 6:02 am, good job Jrs. to get your adults there on time. Captain Tom was at the helm and Ichiro was in the galley making his great breakfast choices. On deck were Michael and Cody, new to us. At the bait receivers we picked up great load of live squid and anchovies. Heading up the coast we traveled up to the long pipe and started fishing. It was slow at the start so Captain Tom moved to a few different spots, but they were no better, so we moved back to the pipe and started fly lining anchovies with a small slider. The calico bass were keyed on the small baits and not the squid for the most part. We had about 10 keeper bass, even with the new size limit of 14 inches. The Jrs. caught and released another 40 or more bass. The Terns were dive bombing our chum and catching anchovies in the air, which the Jrs really enjoyed. God again blessed with a safe trip and calm seas. Besides that, all of the Jrs got to catch fish.

Cedros 2013

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Cedros Island with Cedros Adventures, June 17 – 21,2013
We started with 8 veterans and 4 first timers.
We met at my house at 3:30 am and Gilberto, our driver, had the van loaded by 4:00 am. We were on the road and stopped in Ensenada for Breakfast and after a short wait, we were off to the airport. Gilberto and a few of his helpers had our 500 lbs. of tackle ready to go thru customs. All bags were opened and checked, we breezed thru customs with no problems. At the arrival of the plane from Cedros we had the opportunity to talk to the group that had just finished their fishing adventure and they said Calicos were wide open and yellowtail were close to 50 lbs. As we boarded the plane I asked if I could sit shotgun and was told “ok”. I was looking forward to seeing the beautiful Baja Coast and looking for whales. As soon as we took off and got to altitude the Coast was overcast all the way to Cedros. All we could see was the top of the clouds, but as we got to Cedros the clouds cleared enough to see the Island.
Nice landing by our pilot. After a quick unloading of the plane onto one van and one pick up truck we were off to our final destination, the hotel. The guys in the van needed to stop in town for some cerveza (Corona to be precise) and some other essentials. I was in the truck with Dennis and Dan and we headed straight to the hotel to pick out our rooms. (sorry Mike and Eric) sometimes it’s good to not drink. After we settled into our rooms, we got all of our gear ready for the next morning, which was very early. At that time a few of the guys walked down 100+ steps for some shore fishing off the beach. 5 guys = 1 Calico. After dinner a few more guys went down to try out their luck and were able to net one more Calico. The night was cut short for most, as the wake up call was 5am.
Day 1, June 18
Tuesday morning, 5 am early wake up call. After a quick breakfast we are loaded into the vehicles leaving the hotel by 5:45 all the gear had been loaded by the staff onto the truck and van ready to go. The harbor is only 5 minutes away!
By 6 am all four boats were ready and loaded – ready to fish. Each boat stopped for bait, after 15-20 mackerel we were caught, we were off, ready to catch yellowtail, my claim to fame was catching 5 mackerel on a 6 hook bait rig. Jim and David ended up with about 8 yellowtail, Jim caught a new club record – a Yellowtail at 43 lbs, 2 oz. I kept feeding the sea lions and burning up one of my drags on my reel. Jim was very kind and let me use one of his fishing reels, as he stripped the line off of one of my reels and put it onto another reel. For the day all 4 boats ended up with 21 yellowtail.
Rick Dryer and Mike Kaneen both had yellowtail over 40 lbs. Rick Dryer had his personal best at 41lb 5oz. The second part of day one all 4 boats fished for Calico, with many Bass in the 2-5 lb range – with the heaviest bass being approx. 6.5lbs.
Day 2, June 19
The wind was blowing, which made the fishing almost impossible, only one Yellowtail for the day. Three out of 4 boats had a very hard day of fishing, with winds up to 35 mph. That’s not fun on a big boat let alone a 25 ft panga. We saw the Royal Star, Shogun and the Intrepid all fishing off shore with us in our little pangas. As they moved toward the leeward side of the island for protection from the wind, we knew our little boats needed to move also.
The hot boat for day 2 was made up of Dan and Mark Ross both first timers to the island and Dennis Manti the veteran down for his second time. Since this was Cedros Adventures first trip with 12 guys that meant there needed to be a new skipper for the 4th boat. He turned out to be the best skipper on day 2 and 3. As the three anglers on day 2 had 30 -40 big calicos up to 7 lbs, all in all approx. 100 calico caught by their boat . Mark had the biggest calico of the day at 7 lb 7 oz.
Day 3, June 20
Early in the morning all four boats were racing around in the usual spots to try to make bait. There was no bait to be caught, not even one mackerel. So we decided to go calico fishing. The spot we wanted to fish was approx.. 1 hour away with some strong winds in our face. Once we got to the boiler rocks we all made some nice casts. We started fishing off the rocks and into the kelp beds where we started getting our hook ups. Our boat ended up with over 60 calicos for the day with some in the 6-7 lb range. Our last day of fishing for all four boats was great for calicos, but no yellowtail were caught. The new skipper, once again, put Dennis, Dan and Mark onto the big fish again. Dan had a 7 lb 11 oz Calico and his big brother beat him out with an 8 lb 5 oz Calico. Which took big fish honors in the Calico division.
That was the conclusion of our awesome fishing adventure with Cedros Adventures.
The service at Cedros Adventures is outstanding; great dinners, like fresh yellowtail, tacos and tostadas and steak dinners. All served by Omar who runs the hotel and has very high standards and wants to please all of his guests. From this year to last year the hotel has made many nice improvements with many more on the board for future plans.

The general manager of Seeker Rods, Darin gave us 12 different rods to take down with us and “try out”. The rods were really great and this was a plus for our trip. We left the rods down for future anglers to try out. Seeker is in the planning stages of making a rod for fishing Cedros Island specifically.
The Lord totally blessed our trip once again with many great catches and great times of fellowship.
Total Fish Count:
22 yellowtail
1 Halibut
3 small white sea bass
Many 3-5 lb calicos
Jim Kiech had the biggest Yellowtail at 43lbs 2 oz
Mark Ross had the biggest Calico at 8lbs 5 oz
Jim and Mark each won $60 for their 3 days of fishing
It was a great team effort. When we got home, we spread the fish out onto the front lawn and we all ended up with 7 bags each of yellowtail and 4 bags of calicos – perfect sashimi grade filets.
We may be booking another trip for the summer of 2015.
Thanks guys, it’s always great to fish with our club members, you all make the trip most enjoyable.
Thanks,
Rick Chalmers

Local fishing is really good right now!

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

Report sent in by Jayson Quimby
On the day before Father’s Day, I had a very small window of opportunity to sneak out and do a little local fishing before my son’s All Star baseball game at noon, so I invited my dad, and Ron Withers. We were in the water by 4:00AM. As we were right outside of our first spot, I looked at Ron and said, “One of these days we are going to uncork a couple good ones in there.” We pulled in nice and tight, and the bites started! One here, a good one there, and suddenly we knew it was going to be a REALLY good day! We went on to have about 2 hours of excellent Calico Bass fishing. They were all legal sized fish with a lot in the 2-4 pound range, and a couple in the 5-6 pound range! Growing up, my dad always took me fishing, and rigged me up. Now that he is 75, it’s my turn. I’m happy to say he probably caught more fish than I did, and we all left with that awesome smile that comes from catching – not just fishing! Thank you Lord for a great day of catching!

Bermudes Barracuda in the Twilight

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Check out this great report from Steve Bermudes
Well its that time again – Spring time and twilight fishing. A after, work cheap 6 hrs, for a chance at great tasting sand bass and barracuda. I did a trip with the Long Beach Marina 3\4 day Enterprise (No don’t beam me up), an nice old metal hull skippered by capt. Frank Salvino. This was my first twilight of the year, and I heard the barracuda were still feeding on the small squid, so I got out the old white feather and went to work! On my first cast I was rewarded with an 8 pounder. If you have never tried twilight fishing trips it’s a cool summertime answer to beat the heat. Most landings run this type of trip spring though fall.

Whiteseabass Go Wide Open for Walt Galen and Friends!!!

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

I Won’t bore you with the repetitious details. Visual stimulation is all that’s required.
Freedom overnighter fishing 5/24 on the full moon. 25lb fluoro leader, 5/0 hook, 1/4 oz slider, 2 live squid. Back side of Catalina. WSB 25-35 lbs
Mine on the RT. 32lb 6 oz, David’s on the left 30 lbs. The trick was to fish mid water column not the bottom. And you had to … “Feed Them”….. other wise you would miss the bite. Dave was the hot stick on the boat, he gets his limit and hands off 2 more and pulls the hook on another. That’s 4 fat WSB, but he only kept the first one!
 photo WSBtripMayFreedom011_zps54635441.jpg
Along the way a nice 23 lb Halibut gets the hook.
 photo WSBtripMayFreedom008_zpsfd2b6007.jpg
This only shows about half the total WSB we caught.
 photo WSBtripMayFreedom003_zpseaa48e42.jpg
Yes we are happy and yes we are sore and yes we got our limits. God is Good!

Lake Lopez – Shill & Kiech

Monday, May 27th, 2013

Report sent in by Dave Shill
On Tuesday, May 21st my wife Cathy, Jim and Jeannie Kiech and myself went up to Lopez Lake in central CA for 3 days of freshwater bassin’. Post spawn bass fishing can get tough, and with the wind blowing 10-25 mph the entire time made conditions less than ideal, but we persevered and managed to find a few bass that wanted to bite.
Got my personal best freshwater bass at 3 lbs. 13 oz.
 photo LopezLakeMay2013005_zps7f5a9574.jpg
Cathy got her first two bass, one on a spinnerbait, and one on a crankbait.
 photo LopezLakeMay2013003_zps1afb9692.jpg
 photo LopezLakeMay2013007_zps32f17c43.jpg
Most all Jim and my fish came on 3″ Big Hammer or MC swimbaits.
 photo LopezLakeMay2013002_zps0b892f77.jpg
Altho’ we only spent one afternoon going for the panfish, i.e. crappie, bluegill, redear,it seemed to be pretty wide open for those targeting them. Cath and I will be eating fish tacos tonight! Lopez lake camping is incredible! Beautiful scenery, beautiful lake, and the most wildlife I’ve ever seen in a California campground.

Island Bassin’

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

Report sent in by Jayson Quimby

….Well, after somewhat of a come back on Saturday in round 3 of the 2013 SWBA series(14th place) and not TOTALLY out of the running to make the Finale this year, I decided it really was time to get over to Catalina. Spent Tuesday @ the island with friends Maynard Poynter, Mitch Russo, and Jeremy Glenn. The wind and wind swell were way up. Crappy 1:45 crossing over. West end was total garbage with wind (10-15 MPH) steep swell (3-4′ @ 6 sec.) white caps everywhere, and island refraction….really wet & bumpy. The fishing was good, not great, but good. Caught around 40 fish.
I just want to thank Dave Belden for making me some custom Kelp Kritters. It’s an awesome bait. Unreal how it calls in the biters, and it’s usually a better grade! Every time I pulled it out, it was followed by a grumble of “Oh no, there he goes again with that magic bait…..” from the other guys on board.
I also want to thank Kevin Stafford @ Tenacious for the Wedless swimbaits and heads.
Thanks guys!

Nice fish first thing in the morning. Sorry about the lousy angle.
