March 19th brought the annual event at Irvine Lake – The only junior angler participating was 10 year-old Makenna Shill, who weighed in a 2lb. 1oz. rainbow trout.Photobucket
On May 2nd, 15 anglers participated in the Newport Bay Bass tournament – Congratulations to our own Tom Handzus for another 1st place finish, keeping his Newport Bay streak going. 2nd place went to Roy Fukushima, and 3rd to Val Handzus. All winning fish were spotted bay bass.

Here’s Dave Shill with a legal Halibut. It didn’t count for the tournament, but he probably tasted good!

On June 20th we held our Private Boaters Calico Coastal tournament out of Long Beach. Anglers mostly fished the Federal Breakwall, which is usually just referred to as “The Wall.” Winning it this year was the dynamic duo of Dave Shill and Ron Withers. Here they are with their winning 3 fish limit of Calicos!

Also catching some nice Calicos were Tom And Val Handzus

Here’s Val with a Sandbass that was probably the biggest fish weighed that day – Too bad it was a Calicos only tournament!

On Saturday, July 25th, we held our second Newport Bay bass tournament, a 2-man team event. Five teams came out to fish in near perfect conditions: warm water, a good tidal flow, and morning cloud cover that lasted until 10 AM. Congratulations again to the team of Tom and Val Handzus, who took first place and continue to be the reigning king and queen of the bay.

Second place  went to Roy Fukushima and Steve Hanano. Here’s Steve with a 2.37 lb. Spottie he landed!

On August 6th we had a rough 1.5 day charter on the Amigo out of Newport Landing. The boat stopped short of the target of Yellowfin Tuna fishing on the Cortez Bank and the group settled for fishing San Clemente Island because of rough weather. The early birds got a nice bite on Barracuda, but it went away quickly. Jim Kiech managed a 6 pounder.

This was followed up by a nice Yellowtail bite in which Jim Kiech landed the jackpot fish, a 27# Yellowtail.Photobucket
The remainder of the day was spent fishing the coves of the island in fairly pleasant waters catching a variety of nice fish including guest Chris Yates’ 5.25# Halibut,Photobucketand guest Greg Henry’s 11# White Sea Bass.Photobucket
September 11th was another great 1.5 day charter on the Amigo. Fishing all the way down in Mexican waters, it was a long haul, but a good call! At about 6pm, they hit the mother load of paddies and everybody got to fill their sacks with quality fish. Final count was 80 yellowfin, 23 dorado, and 13 yellowtail. Jackpot and biggest tuna of the year at 26 pounds went to Dave Shill. PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
Our final charter of the year was in October on the Amigo. We started the day catching rockfish at Santa Barbara Island – Here’s a tasty Treefish caught by Jayson Quimby Photobucket
After that we headed out in search of exotics between Catalina and San Clemente Island. Paula Kunkle caught the jackpot fish, and the biggest fish caught by a FIB’erette for 2009 – Here she is with her 24# Yellowfin Tuna:PhotobucketThe following are some of the nice Yellowfin Tuna caught by others on this trip:PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
