SWBA California Offshore Challenge

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

FIB’ers Jayson Quimby and Ron Withers will be competing in the SWBA California Offshore Challenge again this year. Please say a prayer for their safety and success. The event is January 5 & 6 arriving on the 4th. The format is simple. Each day you catch 5 of the biggest Calico Bass you can and bring them back to the weigh in alive. Winning weights for the last few years have been right around 45+ pounds for the 2-day weight totals, so you really have to catch the right ones – big ones! Since it’s January and it takes place around our offshore islands like Catalina, San Clemente, Santa Barbara and San Nicholas, anything is possible. Some days we have perfect-flat-calm weather, other days can be very dangerous with 12 foot plus swells and strong wind from every direction.
You can catch live coverage of the weigh in on the SWBA site here: http://www.saltwaterbassanglers.com/2013cocweighin.htm

United Anglers Tackle and Boating Swap Meet

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

On Saturday, November 12th the FIBers partnered with United Anglers of Southern California in their first Tackle and Boating Swap Meet. It was held at the Compton Hunting and Fishing Club. The primary purpose was to raise funds to support the costly legal battle recreational anglers and allied businesses are currently engaged in to protect our right to fish along the California coastline. 50% of our proceeds went to the Ocean Access Protection Fund, a fund established by UASC. All funds donated to the OAPF were matched by the American Sportfishing Association, up to $50,000. In spite of the rain, there was a great turnout for this event. Several FIBer members came out to work our booth, and we had a great time together. Afterward, some enjoyed the crab feed and fish tacos served up by UASC. We’d like to thank all those members who participated in this fund raising event, as well as all those who donated tackle and boating accessories. The FIBers also would like to thank UASC, especially event director Robin Osborne, for inviting our participation in this event. And we thank the Lord for His blessing on us in 2011!

Surf Fishing With Bill Varney

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Report by Dave Shill
On Saturday, April 16, we held our surffishing seminar with expert surffisherman Bill Varney. This event had been scheduled twice in the fall of 2010, and twice rained out! But Saturday was different. We had near perfect conditions with high pressure over us, warming water, good tide, and a bit of surf to kick the fish into biting. Five FIB’ers met Bill at Bolsa Chica State Beach at 6:30 am. He proceeded to give us tips on gear, rigging baits, and general presentation techniques before we went out. Photobucket As we hit the surf line, immediately the bite began with the surf perch all over our ghost shrimp and sand crabs. We all managed to land a few fish before things slowed down, with our host Bill and FIBer member Art Gomez landing the largest fish. Art’s was close to 1.5 lbs., the jackpot fish of the day. PhotobucketThe bite began to shut off around 10, so we packed ‘er up and talked fishing for awhile before heading home. We’d like to say thanks again to Bill for his excellent presentation, he truly is “the man” when it comes to local knowledge. And of course we thank our LORD for another wonderful day on the water!

Be sure to check out Bill’s website at: www.fishthesurf.com It is a beautiful site and he freely shares all the info one would need to have a successful day in the surf.
