Reverse 1.5 Day Charter on the Outrider

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Report by Dave Shill

WSB May 10

Our first offshore charter aboard the Outrider left the landing at 1pm on Thursday, May 27th for a reverse 1.5 day trip targeting white seabass. The 10 FIBers aboard were all very excited about fishing this new boat, and recent reports had the biscuits biting again. The Outrider is a beautiful 50′ Delta sportfisher built in 1976 that has been meticulously refurbished by owner John Pittman, he himself doing much of the work. It is very clean and comfortably accommodated our group of ten. After meeting up with the Truline who passed off a couple scoops of fresh squid to us, we hit the east end of Catalina Thursday evening. On our second stop, we got two biscuits to bite, landing both right before dark. With a couple aboard, we were looking forward to the next early morning bite. Unfortunately, it never really happened for us. We landed many small Calicos throughout the trip, a few rockfish, and one 50# grade batray, but no more seabass. We returned home Friday evening a bit disappointed, but nevertheless thankful for the opportunity to fish a really great new boat. Let’s hope and pray the next trip in June turns it around for us! Thanks to owner John Pittman, who did a great job cooking for us, Capts. Jeff Jessup and Paul Working, and crew member Manny for working hard for us. We’ll see you again! Thanks to our Lord who’s goodness and mercies never end!

Newport Bay Bass Tournament #1

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Picture 1

Report by Dave Shill

The first Newport Bay Bass tournament for 2010 was held on Saturday May 22 under partly cloudy skies, warming water, and generally pretty good conditions. We had 6 boats with 13 adult anglers and one junior participating. Lots of fish were caught by all anglers, including halibut, barracuda, white sea bass, spot fin croaker and a 50# bat ray. While none of these counted in this event, the bay is still alive with multiple species of fish. This was an individual event, all anglers competing against each other for the single biggest sand bass, calico, or spotted bay bass. The noon weigh in at the DFG Backbay Science Center dock produced lots of contenders, but in the end a 2.11# sand bass caught by Jeannie Kiech prevailed as winner. The rulers of Newport Bay, Tom and Val Handzus, shared 2nd and 3rd place, each weighing a 1.80 spottie. Congratulations once more to all winners, and thanks to all who came out to participate. A special thanks as well to Jerry Bent, whose volunteer work at the DFG allows us use of their facility. Hope to see you all at the July 24 team event. We thank the Lord for His blessing on our club.

May’s Monthly Meeting

Friday, May 21st, 2010

On May 20th we held our monthly meeting with 30+ FIB’ers in attendance. Del gave the devotion, while Floyd handled the M.C. duties of the meeting. Many people brought fishing tackle to sell at the swap table. There were many happy customers who walked away with some great fishing gear. Our guest speaker was Paul Working of the charter boat “The Outrider,” and of “Catch 22 Fisheries.”

Paul shared with us valuable information about the new boat in our club’s list of charter boats. “The Outrider” is based out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro. It was recently repowered and it has even been updated with the latest and greatest electronics. We are anxiously awaiting our first charter on “The Outrider,” on May 28th. Paul is also a biologist and the founder of “Catch 22 fisheries” which is a non-profit organization dedicated to reversing the steady decline of fish populations in Southern California waters. Paul shared with us about some of their projects which include the retrieval of abandoned gill nets, voluntary Calico Bass slot limits, and the teaching of proper fish release techniques. We look forward to our June 17th club meeting when we will have Cory Sanden of MC Swimbaits as our guest speaker, and we will hear about some awesome catches by FIB’ers on the Outrider from this month’s reverse 1.5 day charter!
