Long Haul But Good Call
By  Dave Shill
That title best describes our Sept. 11 day and a half trip
aboard the Amigo. I got a call from the landing about nine
a.m. Thursday informing me to let everybody know they’d
need to bring an extra $15 for permits. We would be
heading for Mexican waters where the biggest mass of fish
had stacked up. We left the dock at nine p.m. sharp to
discover there was no bait in the receivers at Newport Bay
and the bait boat was still out. We went out a couple miles
and Mike our skipper metered and lit up a bait ball. After
waiting another couple hours for the bait boat to wrap us
and deliver bait into our tanks, we were off at two a.m.
The next day was a decent pick on paddies with yellowfin
tuna, dorado, and yellowtail being landed at a half dozen
or so paddies. Finally, at about 6pm, we hit the mother
lode of paddies and everybody got to fill their sacks with
quality fish. Final count was 80 yellowfin, 23 dorado, and
13 yellowtail. Jackpot and biggest tuna of the year so far at
26 pounds went to Dave Shill. We also had several quality
dorado up to 20 pounds. The largest was landed by our
guest Bob Anderson. This was our best trip this year and
we thank the Lord for it!
