I Won’t bore you with the repetitious details. Visual stimulation is all that’s required.
Freedom overnighter fishing 5/24 on the full moon. 25lb fluoro leader, 5/0 hook, 1/4 oz slider, 2 live squid. Back side of Catalina. WSB 25-35 lbs
Mine on the RT. 32lb 6 oz, David’s on the left 30 lbs. The trick was to fish mid water column not the bottom. And you had to … “Feed Them”….. other wise you would miss the bite. Dave was the hot stick on the boat, he gets his limit and hands off 2 more and pulls the hook on another. That’s 4 fat WSB, but he only kept the first one!
Along the way a nice 23 lb Halibut gets the hook.
This only shows about half the total WSB we caught.
Yes we are happy and yes we are sore and yes we got our limits. God is Good!

On Tuesday, May 21st my wife Cathy, Jim and Jeannie Kiech and myself went up to Lopez Lake in central CA for 3 days of freshwater bassin’. Post spawn bass fishing can get tough, and with the wind blowing 10-25 mph the entire time made conditions less than ideal, but we persevered and managed to find a few bass that wanted to bite.
Got my personal best freshwater bass at 3 lbs. 13 oz.
Cathy got her first two bass, one on a spinnerbait, and one on a crankbait.
Most all Jim and my fish came on 3″ Big Hammer or MC swimbaits.
Altho’ we only spent one afternoon going for the panfish, i.e. crappie, bluegill, redear,it seemed to be pretty wide open for those targeting them. Cath and I will be eating fish tacos tonight! Lopez lake camping is incredible! Beautiful scenery, beautiful lake, and the most wildlife I’ve ever seen in a California campground.
Great family destination, about 5 hours from Costa Mesa towing a boat or travel trailer. Dave Shill

….Well, after somewhat of a come back on Saturday in round 3 of the 2013 SWBA series(14th place) and not TOTALLY out of the running to make the Finale this year, I decided it really was time to get over to Catalina. Spent Tuesday @ the island with friends Maynard Poynter, Mitch Russo, and Jeremy Glenn. The wind and wind swell were way up. Crappy 1:45 crossing over. West end was total garbage with wind (10-15 MPH) steep swell (3-4′ @ 6 sec.) white caps everywhere, and island refraction….really wet & bumpy. The fishing was good, not great, but good. Caught around 40 fish.
I just want to thank Dave Belden for making me some custom Kelp Kritters. It’s an awesome bait. Unreal how it calls in the biters, and it’s usually a better grade! Every time I pulled it out, it was followed by a grumble of “Oh no, there he goes again with that magic bait…..” from the other guys on board.
I also want to thank Kevin Stafford @ Tenacious for the Wedless swimbaits and heads.
Thanks guys!
Nice fish first thing in the morning. Sorry about the lousy angle.
Mitch Russo getting it done in the “Bill Dance” chair.”
Headless fisherman – Awesome Bait!
Nicer follower ate it at the boat after a smaller fish came off!
She was right where she’s suppose to be. INHALED the 9″!
Stoked to be back in the harbor after a 100 mile day, and some really snotty channel crossings.
Only eat the small ones!
