Bud’s Bird

Friday, April 27th, 2012

The following report was recently sent in from Bill Coe:
I don’t normally go out for rock cod, but Bud Sharp, Chuck Wheeler and I went out last Friday, 20Apr12. We were tired of waiting for the water to warm up. Brought back about 20 rock cod and 20 sand dabs. This little bird, a warbler, found us about 10-12 mi out, halfway to Catalina. He rode with us until he got warm and rested. Apparently they live here along the coast and go back to British Columbia for the summer. Bud was thrilled to death. He is 92 yr young this year, I think. Incidentally, we brought back about 20 rock cod and 20 sand dabs.

Mission Bay Tournament April 21, 2012

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

To say that we were all very excited to fish the first FIB’er Bass Tournament of the year would be an understatement; we were all chomping at the bit to get out there and fish for Spotted Bay Bass in Mission Bay. 7 teams- consisting of 16 adults and 4 juniors – assembled in the gray light at Dana Landing to kick off our first event of the year. The goal is simple, use artificial lures to catch your three heaviest Spotted Bay Bass inside Mission Bay, and weigh them in alive back at the landing. Although the weather was very nice leading up to the event, most teams reported very slow fishing throughout the bay, but in the end, all but one team had fish to weigh in!
Results:
First place – Team Basstache: Andrew & Art Gomez, and Jeremy Glenn.
3-fish limit = 5.19 #’s
Big Fish = 2.06 #’s

Second Place – Team Bass Hounds: Maynard Poynter, Sergio Fainstein, & Ron Hobbs
3-fish limit = 4.77 #’s

Third Place – Team Da’ Fly Fish: Dave Shill & Floyd Spangler
3-fish limit = 4.62 #’s

After the weigh in, and pulling our boats out of the water, we all gathered in the parking lot for a tail gate picnic. The fellowship was sweet and it helped nourish us for the 2-hour drive back home. Photobucket
We thank the Lord for another wonderful day of fun, fishing and fellowship in His glorious name!
Finally, congratulations to our winners, and we look forward to seeing all of you at our next tournament, the “Calico Coastal” on June 23rd in Long Beach!

Ben Florentino Does Not Disappoint!

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Thursday night, April 19 was a great night for the FIB’ers. We had an above average amount of members present as Fred Madsen led us in “Amazing Grace” on his harmonica and Rick Chalmers gave a heart-felt devotional. Dorian Quimby received his Big Fish Awards:

Ben Florentino gave a very informative seminar which Steve Bermudes captured for us – Thanks Steve!!

At the end of the meeting, Ben Florentino generously raffled off two Plano boxes stuffed with Big Hammer swimbaits and War leadheads, and a 1/2 day fishing charter for two with him on his 22 foot Skeeter. WOW! Thank you Benny! Please think of Ben Florentino the next time you are considering hiring saltwater fishing guide. You will not regret it! One Good Bite Makes All the Difference!

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

We recently received this fishing report from Ken Kunkel:

Mission Viejo Lake April 7, 2012

We had a blast at the Lake not a lot of fish, but a super GOOD TIME. We met Rick in Ralph’s Parking lot with both of my boys (grandkids) in tow. They were excited to GO fishing. We followed Rick to Lake Mission Viejo. Where we unloaded our gear and climbed into an electric boat. Off we went. Rick had his gear all ready to fish. We, on the other hand, needed to tie up leaders and attach the floats. There was a little problem with trying to tie 6 lbs test line with old eyes, but all set-up was finally finished and fishing began. The fishing was slow but snacks and wonderful fishing stories were plentiful. Rick hooked a nice size trout–3.5 lbs. And he graciously let Jack reel in the big fish. Jack was so proud of his accomplishment thanks to Rick. We continued to fish but the fish were just not biting. We pulled anchor at 11:30am and headed to the dock. On the way in Luke was allowed to drive the boat. He had a smile on his face from ear to ear. We did not kill a lot of fish that day, but all had a wonderful time on the water sharing the excitement of fishing.

Thanks again, Rick, for your gracious sponsoring of a day on Lake Mission Viejo.
