Surf Fishing With Bill Varney

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Report by Dave Shill
On Saturday, April 16, we held our surffishing seminar with expert surffisherman Bill Varney. This event had been scheduled twice in the fall of 2010, and twice rained out! But Saturday was different. We had near perfect conditions with high pressure over us, warming water, good tide, and a bit of surf to kick the fish into biting. Five FIB’ers met Bill at Bolsa Chica State Beach at 6:30 am. He proceeded to give us tips on gear, rigging baits, and general presentation techniques before we went out. Photobucket As we hit the surf line, immediately the bite began with the surf perch all over our ghost shrimp and sand crabs. We all managed to land a few fish before things slowed down, with our host Bill and FIBer member Art Gomez landing the largest fish. Art’s was close to 1.5 lbs., the jackpot fish of the day. PhotobucketThe bite began to shut off around 10, so we packed ‘er up and talked fishing for awhile before heading home. We’d like to say thanks again to Bill for his excellent presentation, he truly is “the man” when it comes to local knowledge. And of course we thank our LORD for another wonderful day on the water!

Be sure to check out Bill’s website at: www.fishthesurf.com It is a beautiful site and he freely shares all the info one would need to have a successful day in the surf.
